What can we learn from here: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/tech/article/japans-gadget-failures-the-futures-that-never-happened/
From this article, we can see that, not every invention bring innovation. Some invention failed at the beginning. It waste so much time, money and energy on failed products that were expected to be succeeded.
They, at that time too ambitious to please their customers with their playful and crazy ideas and at the same time they were forgot that they are also in a business where their profit is based on their customer wants and needs. For instance, who wants a radio in a shape of television and cost a little more than a month's salary of an elite public servant of that time? And a television-shaped gas stove that was sold at the most expensive model at that time? It's not about what customer wants and needs but they at that time just following the trend where people admired the television set.
But, as we all know, creativity is about taking a big risk. As Masuda said, "But companies in this period were vigorous and had a ‘go-for-it’ spirit. They were not afraid of failures"
So, we can conclude that, we all can be creative, inventive and innovative as long as it can bring something meaningful and useful for the community.
Different country have a different kind of cretivity history. For instance, in Greece creativity, there is a Temple of Poseidon, Calauria.
Uniqueness:
There are six columns on each short side and twelve on each long side.We can see a unique concept applied to this temple which is the concept of balance. Back then, this was among the first building was built with this kind of concept. Objectivity:
This temple was built because they need some place for some religion activity. It is creative when this temple gave the expected result. Beauty of art:
The official religion inspired themes for artistic expressions and justifications for temples, statues and plays devoted the the glories of the god.
2. What environmental conditions existed? The needs: For the mosque and temple, they need some place for some religion activities and that is why they built it. Easiness: The purpose of creating something is often related to make our life easier. For example, the purpose of creating transportations. Speed: They need to be faster. This is the time where is the invention of the telephone, car and so on. 3. What was the process of creativity? 1. Identify the problems and needs. They know their problems and needs in order to know what is to build or create. 2. Produce the idea. What is the suitable building or things to be built or created. 3. Try and error. They do not afraid to fail. Creativity is about taking a big risk. 4. Do it with passion. They love to do what they love to do. 5. Response and feedback. What do people say about their products/things/building? Is it useful or not? 6. Improvement.
1. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/tech/article/the-pc-is-dead-long-live-the-tablet/ . What does it tell us about the process of invention and innovation?
According to the article, "The PC is Dead, long Live The Tablet", Nov 07,2012.
It's hard to tell the difference between Invention and Innovation but, I will make it simple. The process is starting with invention because it generates new ideas, prototypes, patterns, designs, breakthrough experiments and working models. Then, the innovation takes place that transforms these inventions into commercial products or services or making improvement by introducing something new.
From this article, we can see that, phones and desktop and laptop computers is the technology we used at work - was far more expensive- as recently as 15 years ago (invention) and now, the tablets have turned the mobile and desktop devices people take for granted at home are far superior to what they find sitting on their desks when they come into work in the morning (innovation).
Tablets are using the existing technology in new ways. By this, we can make a conclusion that the innovation can reduces the price and at the same time improves the quality of the work.
2. Ask yourself what kind of environment, situation, etc, would make you to become creative/innovative/inventive person?
I can become a creative person in the kind of situation where I could not afford to buy the things that I want. It's about a month ago, was my special friend's birthday and at that time, I do not have enough money to buy any special present for him. Since I love cooking and baking, I've decided to make the red velvet cup cakes and all the decorations by myself. It just took a half of the red velvet cake price in the market to buy all the ingredients and I just used a few toothpicks and some old papers for the decorations. And, guess what? It became so special because you can not find this kind of red velvet cupcakes in the market! Here's the result:
1. List A- Give 5 words associated with 'Creativity'. List B- Give 5 words not associated with 'Creativity'
List A:
1. Uniqueness - I think, people who have a higher need of being unique are tends to be creative. The more creative you are, the more unique you will be.
2. Madness - As I said before, creativity is something unique, and only 'mad' people dare to do something out of norm/unique.
3. Imagination - You need to have an 'out of box' imagination in order to create something unique.
4. Beauty - Creative stuffs are always beautiful. :)
5. Value - Writers, actors, graphic designers, fashion designer and many others doing creative work for a living.
List B:
1. Common - If someone is creative they won't do something common and they'll come out with something different.
2. Boring - Someone creative know how to enjoy the life.
3. Plain - Nothing interesting without creativity
4. Rough - Someone creative know how to make their work smooth, clean and beautiful.
5. Tasteless - If someone is creative, they would rather sew beads onto a plain shirt than wear it plain. :)
2. Respond and reflect to the Ken Robinson 2006 Ted Talk episode on creativity education and intelligence.
Sir Ken Robinson said that "Children are not afraid of being wrong and they are born artist, and the problem is to make an artist as we'll grow up". I remember when I was a kid, I love to imitate an actress and I love to re-enact a few scenes in a film. To make it short, I love acting. Then, when time flies, I went to school, my teacher said, "being an actress is not a good choice of career". So, I stop dreaming about it anymore. I think, we need to support the children, send them to the right academy to develop their skills. If I went to acting school back then, maybe I am an actress today. :)
The Titanic hit the iceberg because the iceberg is small at the top and bigger at the bottom, if somehow the iceberg is vice versa, for sure the captain of the Titanic will notice it and evade it. Hehe. :)
2. What is the object of curiosity? What does it do? How and Why?
What? - I love cooking and baking, and I can see this object like a 'Biscuit Pump'.
What does it do? - It can produce patterned dough pieces.
Why? - Because this object has a hole to put the dough inside.
How? - We need to add a lid with a thin patterned hole like this;
in front of the hollow cylinder and tighten them together. We also need a without-hole-cylinder with the handle to push the dough out.
